On September 11, the California Women Lawyers (CWL) will celebrate their 40th Anniversary Annual Dinner and Silent Auction with  Keynote Speaker California Supreme Court Justice, Joyce L. Kennard (Ret.).

CWL is the only statewide bar association for women in California whose goal is to promote the advancement of women in the legal profession and actively advocate for the concerns of women in society.

This year’s event welcomes incoming President, Wendy Behan, a Partner at Casey, Gerry, Schenk, Francavilla, Blatt & Penfield, LLP in San Diego. In addition, CWL will present The Honorable Lynn Schenk with the California Women Lawyer’s Fay Stender Award in recognition of her commitment to the advancement of women and minorities. Justice Kennard will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her distinguished career.

Justice Kennard was appointed to the California Supreme Court by Governor George Deukmejian in April 1989. Her opinions and dissents have stood out amongst her colleagues and left a profound impact in California law. For example, Justice Kennard lent her support to two landmark decisions, one struck down a law requiring parental consent for minors to have an abortion, and the other decision granted equal marriage rights to gays and lesbians. At least six of Justice Kennard’s dissenting opinions were later enacted into law by state legislators.

Justice Kennard’s consistent service to the legal profession and the community sets her out in a league of her own.
