San Diego Superior Court Update

In an effort to ensure our patrons are aware of what is going on in our San Diego legal community, here is an update regarding the San Diego Superior Court’s COVID-19 procedures as of Tuesday, March 17, 2020. The Court states that:

  • Jury Duty from March 16th to April 3rd: All San Diego County residents summoned to appear DO NOT need to come to the courthouse for their jury summons.
  • Jury Duty beyond Monday, April 5th: monitor the San Diego Superior Court’s website and Twitter account for further information.
  • Criminal proceedings, including arraignments, readiness conferences, pre-trial motions, trials, and sentencing have been postponed.
  • Civil Court proceedings will be rescheduled.
    • This includes Unlawful Detainer proceedings.
  • Family Court departments are closed.
    • Family Court mediation and counseling matters will be rescheduled.
    • Family Law Support hearings will be rescheduled.
    • The Family Court Facilitators Office is closed to the public.
    • All clinics and workshops have been cancelled.
  • Small Claims matters will be continued.
    • The Small Claims Advisor will be closed.
  • Juvenile Dependency and Delinquency matters will be continued.
  • All Adoption and Citation calendars will be continued.
  • Probate hearings are suspended.
  • All in person visits related to Guardianship and Conservatorship will be suspended.
  • Traffic Court matters will be rescheduled.
    • Those cited to appear in Traffic Court will have a 30-day grace period starting when the court reopens all services.
  • All questions regarding postponements should be directed to the Trials Departments listed in the Court’s March 13, 2020 News Release on page 3
  • The Court will be available for chamber ex-parte requests for Civil Harassment, Domestic Violence, & Gun Violence Temporary Restraining Orders at each branch.
  • A family law judge at each branch will review ex-parte requests for Emergency TROs and Guardianship requests for Minors.
  • A Probate judge will be available to cover Emergency Conservatorship and other emergency orders for Probate court.
  • All Students and other group visitations and programs at the courthouse are suspended until at least the end of the month.
