Job Opening: Reference Librarian for Partnerships & Communications

As part of the iDesk Team, provides excellent customer service, legal reference and circulation functions to the public. Coordinates and takes a leading role in the communication and outreach activities of the library. Actively promotes library services and events to the community. Serves as a liaison to current partners and actively seeks out community partnerships to further the Library’s mission of making the law accessible to everyone (“Law Made Public”).



  • As part of the iDesk Team, provides excellent customer service and legal reference to patrons in person, via phone and email.
  • All librarians are expected to perform circulation functions, money transactions, and assist patrons with copier and computer usage while performing iDesk duties.


  • Responsible for maintaining current partnerships with local legal aid organizations and public libraries and coordinating workshops, clinics, and events.
  • Serve as liaison to local legal aid organizations, bar associations, law schools, legal organizations, public libraries, etc. to organize new partnerships and events.
  • Responsible for joining local legal organizations and associations, and attending networking functions to promote the Law Library, grow partnerships, foster interactions, and help obtain event sponsorships.


  • Works with the Assistant Director of User Experience to show the library’s value to stakeholders. Develops tools and techniques for capturing value and showing the impact the library has on the community as a life changing organization.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of User Experience, senior management team, and the Education Librarian to create content to promote SDLL as an organization, services/benefits/borrowing, and promote individual events and classes.
  • Leads the library’s Social Media team, and champions the use of social media communications working with the Social Media coordinator; reviews and updates Social Media Policy to ensure best practices are created and followed, and that the library social media experience is one of excellence for both users and staff.
  • Works with our Social Media Team to promote library services and value via our various social media platforms, respond to feedback via social media, analyze social media efforts, and recommend the most effective means of communication technology.
  • Responsible for creating, editing, and distributing the weekly SDLL eNews using web development software (e.g. WordPress) and email marketing platform.
  • Plans and coordinates library wide events (e.g. Law Week, Law & Comics, Open House, etc.).
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining target contact lists, press contacts, promotional material and using an email marketing platform (e.g. MailChimp, Constant Contact).


  • Leads focus groups and develops user surveys.
  • Develops assessment tools, metrics, and analyzes data relating to library services.
  • Based on assessment, develops actionable items to further the Library’s Strategic Plan and Mission.
  • Education:
    • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited Law School or equivalent legal experience.


    • Three to five years law library experience or prior law practice. Significant legal research and bibliography experience in print and electronic formats.
    • Proven track record and a passion for designing compelling library programs, projects and campaigns.
    • Experience and knowledge of teamwork tools and methodology.
    • Ability to create metrics, perform complex assessment and turn surveys & assessment into actionable item.
    • Experience working with an integrated library system, preferably KOHA.


    • High degree of creativity, interactive engagement and problem solving ability.
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools and standard office equipment at an intermediate to advanced level.
    • Exceptional written word skills with ability to create press releases, brochures, articles and document procedures.
    • Experience with a variety of survey and assessment methods, including user satisfaction surveys, focus groups, one-on-one interviewing techniques is highly desirable.


    • A strong background in library and team management, project management techniques, organizational structure, and demonstrated knowledge of the user experience literature, computer & information science, and marketing is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of California Civil Procedure.
  • Must be able to travel to all four locations.
  • May be required to work some Saturdays at Downtown and/or North County location.
  • May be required to work outside of normal library hours at special events, networking and outreach opportunities, etc.
