Job Opening: Reference Librarian for Outreach

The San Diego Law Library is open to the public and is dedicated to providing access to justice for all.


Provides excellent customer service and legal reference to the public. Develops and implements a new program that offers desirable services for a fee to compliment our new borrowing program. Promotes library services, benefits, and borrowing program to the community. Demonstrates the Library’s value to library stakeholders through marketing and promotion.



  • As part of the iDesk Team, provides excellent customer service and legal reference to patrons in person, via phone and email.
  • All librarians are expected to perform circulation functions, money transactions, and assist patrons with copier and computer usage while performing iDesk duties.


  • Responsible for creating and implementing a new benefits program which offers services for a fee. This is in lieu of our defunct membership program and will compliment the new borrowing program.
  • Research and document basis for services and fees.
  • Prepare information for Board of Trustee approval of program and document iDesk procedures.


  • Works with the Assistant Director of User Experience to show the library’s value to stakeholders. Develops tools and techniques for capturing value and showing the impact the library has on the community as a life changing organization.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of User Experience, senior management team, and the Public Education librarian to create content to promote SDLL as an organization, services/benefits/borrowing, and promote individual events and classes.
  • Develops and leads the implementation of a marketing plan to promote the Law Library in the community – to attorneys and lay people, legal organizations, and various community organizations and businesses. Develops assessment tools to gauge the effectiveness of marketing plan and changes tactics accordingly.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining target contact lists, press contacts, promotional material and using an email marketing platform.
  • Elevates the Law Library’s image and protects the Library brand by developing and using branding and promotional guidelines for all promotional materials.
  • Has a good sense of design and technical ability to quickly design promotional materials in MS Word, MS Publisher, and WordPress.
  • Creates marketing content and develops appropriate format for conveying information via all media types (press releases, social media, radio promotion, TV ads, in person presentations, web content, brochures, articles, videos, slideshows, etc.)
  • Responsible for joining local legal organizations and associations, and attending networking functions to promote the Law Library, grow partnerships, foster interactions, and obtain event sponsorships.
  • Organizes networking functions and events in conjunction with the San Diego Law Library Foundation to further our fundraising potential.


  •  Leads focus groups and develops surveys.
  • Develops assessment tools, metrics, and analyzes data relating to marketing efforts and library services.
  • Based on assessment, develops actionable items to further the Library’s Strategic Plan and Mission.



  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited Law School or equivalent legal experience.


  • Three to five years law library experience or prior law practice. Significant legal research and bibliography experience in print and electronic formats.
  • Proven track record and a passion for marketing, designing compelling library programs, projects and campaign.
  • Experience and knowledge of teamwork tools and methodology.
  • Ability to create metrics, perform complex assessment and turn surveys & assessment into actionable item.
  • Experience working with an integrated library system, preferably.


  • High degree of creativity, interactive engagement and problem solving ability.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools and standard office equipment at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Exceptional written word skills with ability to create press releases, brochures, articles and document procedures.
  • Experience with a variety of survey and assessment methods, including user satisfaction surveys, focus groups, one-on-one interviewing techniques is highly desirable.


  • A strong background in library and team management, project management techniques, organizational structure, and demonstrated knowledge of the user experience literature, computer & information science, and marketing is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of California Civil Procedure.


  • Must be able to travel to all library locations.
  • Some Saturdays are required.
  • Will be required to occasionally work outside of normal library hours at special events, classes, workshops, networking and outreach opportunities, etc.
  • Compensation: $50,000 to $80,000.
