On July 21, Governor Jerry Brown signed a new law that amends the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act to allow underage college students, who are at least 18 years of age, to sip and spit out alcohol. At first glance, this may seem strange but the purpose is strictly educational! The law allows “qualified students” at a “qualified academic institution” to taste alcohol if it is part of the curriculum for a beer brewing or winemaking class. Budding winemakers and brew masters are now able to progress forward with their education without restrictions due to their age.
