This week our country celebrated Veterans Day, and honoring our veterans is especially important here in San Diego County. We are home to the third largest veteran population in America. Over 200,000 military veterans reside in San Diego County with an estimated 7,500 new veterans retiring here each year.* San Diego County also has the largest concentration of military personnel in the country.*

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), veterans comprise about 10% of arrestee, jail, prison, and community-service populations.* The VA terms these individuals “Justice-Involved Veterans,” and research has found that half of these veterans have either mental health or substance abuse issues.*

San Diego County has created a Military Diversion program,  which is a pretrial program for current or former members of the U.S. military charged with misdemeanor crimes, and who suffer from PTSD or other health problems related to their service. If completed successfully, the diversion program can result in dismissal of the case.

At this MCLE class, the participants will will leave with an understanding of the Military Diversion program in San Diego County, the scope of offenses and conditions included in the program, elements of successful motions for diversion, common issues in inadequate requests, working with military/veteran resources to track & demonstrate progress, successful completion of diversion/dismissal of the case, and reinstatement of proceedings if diversion fails.
