Meet Our New, Improved Library Catalog: Koha

By Kelly on December 16, 2016//Leave a comment

The next time you want to see if we have a certain book, whether you are at home or in the library, you will be using our new library catalog, Koha.

Koha, our new integrated library system (ILS), has several features that will make it easier for you to work with the Law Library.

  • It adapts to whatever device you are using to access the catalog: laptop, a phone, or a tablet.
  • It has a wealth of easy to use filters so you can search by library, type of material, and more.
  • You can log-in to your account from any wireless device and make changes to your personal information, renew books or see your fine amounts.
  • You can subscribe or unsubscribe to receive your library notices (due date reminders, overdue notices, hold notifications) via email.

You might be wondering why the Law Library changed electronic catalogs. We changed for two reasons: cost and functionality. Over the past 6 years, we have had to accommodate a 40% reduction in our funding. This new software is less expensive than the old one. Also, it is web-based which is great for us as the previous ILS was hosted on our own server. We could not afford to update or replace the aging server so we were unable to update our old ILS even though we were still paying for it. This new system is not only more cost-effective for the library, it includes the additional user-friendly functions described above.
