Did you know that there are ten casinos located on tribal land here in San Diego County? These casinos have thousands of guests and put on hundreds of shows each year. But, what happens if you or you client is injured at a casino? In this MCLE, our panel of experts will explain how tort claims on tribal lands are handled.

There are twenty different tribal courts in California. Here is San Diego County, most tribal court claims are handled by the Intertribal Court of Southern California. The Intertribal Court of Southern California serves a consortium of 12 tribes from across SoCal, including the Jamul Indian Village, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.

In this program, you will hear from Associate Judge Gregory Thompson, who was appointed to the Intertribal Court of Southern California in 2015, Alicia Soares, Liability Claims Supervisor of Tribal First Liability Claims, and Phillip C. Samouris, Partner at Higgs, Fletcher, & Mack. These three experts will discuss:

  •  Case management in tort claims
  •  Recommendations for tribal court practice
  • Pre-litigation administration and investigation of tort claims
  •  Tribal representation in patron tort claims
