Law Library Celebrates Law Week 2016

By Cheryl on April 18, 2016//Leave a comment

The San Diego Law Library is joining California County Law Libraries throughout the state in celebrating Law Week, May 1 -May 6. In honor of Law Week we are hosting a series of events designed to increase access to justice. The free events are being presented in partnership with our local bar associations and the Chula Vista and El Cajon Libraries.

Law Week is an extended celebration of Law Day. First established in 1958 by President Eisenhower, Law Day is a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law. Congress declared May 1 as Law Day three years later.  May 1 has been proclaimed Law Day in the County of San Diego and several local cities we serve.   You can view our Law Day proclamations here.

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Unites States Supreme Court case, Miranda v Arizona, (384 U.S. 436 (1966)), the theme for Law Day 2016 is “Miranda: More Than Words.”  A direct result of the Miranda decision is the now famous “Miranda Warning”,  a procedural protection of rights afforded to us by the U.S. Constitution.  For more about the Law Day theme, watch the video message from American Bar Association President Paulette Brown.
