Law Day 2020

By Cheryl on March 12, 2020//Leave a comment

Friday, May 1, is Law Day.  Law Day is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.  Law Day is held annually on May 1. This year’s theme is “Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19 Amendment at 100.”

The theme highlights the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, the constitutional amendment that guaranteed citizens that the right to vote would not be denied or abridged by federal or state government due to sex. American women fought for, and won, the vote through their voice and action. The movement inspired other popular movements for constitutional change.

A 2005 Joint Resolution by Congress resolved that women suffragists should be revered and celebrated for working to ensure the right of women to vote in the United States. Public Law 109-49, 119 STAT. 457, approved August 2, 2005.  The Resolution gives a brief history of the women’s suffrage movement and commemorates key figures in gaining women the right to vote.

The National Archives, located in Washington D.C.,  has an online exhibit featuring the 19th Amendment as part of the exhibit “Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote” on display at the National Archives Museum.

While our traditional Law Day programs have been put on hold, we invite you to join the Law Library of Library of Congress and the American Bar Association in celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment with a FREE  online program, “Social Movement Changing America: The Legacies of the 19th Amendment.” The program is Thursday, April 30, 12:30 PM-1:30 PM PST.
