Law Day, celebrated May 1, is a nationally recognized day of dedication to the principles of government under law. This year’s theme “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All” gives us an opportunity to reflect on words from the Civil Rights Act of 1875 and the XIV Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“It is essential to just government we recognize the equality of all men before the law, and hold that is is the duty of government in its dealings with the people to mete out equal and exact justice to all, of whatever nativity, race, color, or persuasion, religious or political; and it being the appropriate object of legislation to enact great fundamental principles into law.’ Civil Rights Act of 1875
“***; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” XVI Amendment, section 1.
