Join us for this year’s Lindley Law & Comics lecture: Law & Comics Goes to Hollywood. Properties that started as comics or graphic novels have drawn huge audiences to the movies, including Batman, Iron Man, and the Avengers. Now, they are making their presence felt on television (Arrow, Gotham, Flash, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow) and on streaming services (Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones). This does not even include earlier movies like Hellboy, Tank Girl, Ghost World, Scott Pilgrim, and the Mask. How do you protect your rights when you are dealing with comic publishers and Hollywood producers?

Join our 3 panelists as we explore this fascinating topic.

  • Jonathan Maberry is a New York Times best-selling author of horror and young adult novels who also writes comics and has titles in development for both movies and television.
  • Chris Ryall is the long-time CEO of IDW, the San Diego-based comics company that publishes numerous licensed titles – from My Little Pony to Star Trek, and a writer with multiple properties in development.
  • Stu Rees is an attorney and cartoonist. He is the only attorney specializing in syndication contracts and represents cartoonists as they try to publish their work in a variety of mediums.
