Do you have a situation that you think requires legal assistance? Are you unsure whether you should file your case in small claims or civil court? This checklist might be able to help you decide!

  1. Are the damages $10,000 or less?
  2. Does the other party live or have a place of business in California?
  3. Do you want to avoid paying expensive filing fees?
  4. Do you feel like you can handle your case without an attorney?
  5. Do you want to have your case resolved quickly?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, Small Claims Court is the right place for you! Small Claims Court allows you to have your case heard by a judge without having to hire an attorney and deal with complicated rules.  But, where do you start? This Know the Law! lecture will provide you with a basic overview of the Small Claims Court. The session will be conducted by an attorney knowledgeable in Small Claims policies and procedures and will have a Q&A session following the presentation.

The Know the Law! on Small Claims will take place on Tuesday, November 19th, at the Vista Branch of the San Diego County Library, and begins at 10:30 am. And, the best part about the program? It is FREE, so reserve your space TODAY!

Our Know the Law! lectures provide a basic level of knowledge on a legal topic. The sessions are 60-90 minutes long and include a short Q & A session.  The classes are designed to cover legal topics that you are likely to encounter in your daily life. Volunteer attorneys lead this multiple part series in their area of practice. These attorneys should NOT be considered as personal lawyers. You may be required to sign a waiver before speaking to an attorney that states that no attorney client relationship is being created with this free service. The lawyers are there to provide general guidance.

We are proud to be partnering with the San Diego County Library’s Vista branch and the North County Bar Association to provide the Know the Law series of public lectures. This is the last session in the fall Know the Law series, but keep an eye out for next season’s series!
