The San Diego Law Library is joining California County Law Libraries throughout the state in celebrating Law Week, April 28-May 2. In honor of Law Week we are hosting a series of events designed to increase access to justice. The free events are being presented in partnership with our local bar associations, the San Diego Paralegal Association, the San Diego Family Law Facilitator’s Office and the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Appointments for the clinics are first come, first served.
Law Week is an extended celebration of Law Day. First established in 1958 by President Eisenhower, Law Day is a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law. Congress declared May 1 as Law Day three years later. The theme for Law Day 2014 is “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.” As we approach the 50th anniversaries of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the theme highlights the importance of voting and ensuring that our nation’s election laws and practices permit the broadest, least restrictive access to the ballot box.
California County Law Libraries have developed an interactive demonstration of the obstacles to voting throughout American history. Try to cast a ballot. To cast your vote go to www.publiclawlibrary.org/law-week, click on “Locked Out of the Ballot Box: An Online Voting Simulation” and follow the directions. The next Direct Primary Election is June 3, 2014. Your vote matters! Voter registration forms will be available at all branch locations. You can also register to vote by visiting the County of San Diego Registrar of Voters website.
Several cities have proclaimed May 1, 2014 as Law Day in recognition of the San Diego Law Library providing free public access to law and legal information to all residents of San Diego County and that all local, state, and federal government benefit when voters exercise their rights, thereby ensuring that government is truly reflective of the people whom it represents.
