The Witkin Awards are presented annually to honor members of the San Diego legal community for civic leadership and excellence in teaching, practice, enactment, or adjudication of the law. The Witkin Award Ceremony is the primary fundraiser of the San Diego Law Library Foundation. Join us Thursday, October 20, from 5 pm to 8 pm at our Downtown location to honor this year’s recipients.

Our honorees have made Access to Justice part of their life’s work. Our focus on the awardees starts with our winners for Excellence in Civic Leadership and Philanthropy, Justin P. Brooks, Esq. of the California Innocence Project; and for Excellence in the Adjudication of the Law, The Honorable Joan P. Weber, San Diego Superior Court.

Justin P. Brooks  is the Director and Co-Founder of the California Innocence Project, a non-profit clinical program based at California Western School of Law, a project established to remedy the lack of assistance available to factually innocent men and women incarcerated in California. In 2010 and 2012, California Lawyer Magazine recognized him with the “Lawyer of the Year” award.

Judge Joan P. Weber has been a trial judge in San Diego for over 26 years. She was President of the California Judges Association from 2014-2015. Also, she recently served a one year term as an advisory member of the California Judicial Council.  She primarily handles criminal trials. This year, Judge Weber was awarded the Pursuit of Justice Award from the Tort, Trial and Insurance Section of the American Bar Association.
