The San Diego Law Library is your law library, and there are many ways you can take advantage of all we have to offer. Here is just a sample of what you can expect when you walk through our doors.

Legal Research Materials

The San Diego Law Library is home to the largest public collection of local, state, federal and international printed legal materials. In addition, we offer free access to expensive online legal databases, including Lexis and Westlaw. We also provide special collections on topics of special interest to our region, including Tribal Law, Military Law, Border Law and Water Law.

Educational Programs and Legal Clinics

Thanks to partnerships with the law schools at the University of San Diego, Thomas Jefferson and California Western, the law library in many ways serves as the county’s fourth law school – the people’s law school. In addition to the free and low-cost legal educational programs and clinics we develop each year, our law school partners volunteer at the library by holding legal clinics for those that cannot afford a lawyer.

Practical Guidance and Support

Our staff is the heart and soul of the law library. When you come to the law library, you will be welcomed by a staff member who can direct you to the right resources to address your needs. While they cannot offer legal advice, our reference staff can guide you to books, forms and databases – many of which are geared toward non-attorneys – so you can find the answers you are seeking. Reference librarians are available onsite, as well as online through our Meebo chat room, email, Facebook and Twitter.

Relaxed and Welcoming Environment

The San Diego Law Library is more than a place to study and research. Throughout all of our branches, we are a community center where you can meet and interact with others. We provide free internet access, comfortable reading areas, private meeting rooms and event space.
