How are You Going to Celebrate Law Day?
San Diego Law Library has planned a month of exciting events to celebrate Law Day! The American Bar Association has designated May 1st as Law Day, a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. This year’s Law Day Theme is “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.” These three rights are the foundation of American society, and this year’s theme encourages us all to educate and explore these fundamental rights to ensure that there can be liberty for all.
May 1-31, Lawyers Without Rights Exhibit: We are honored to host the ABA exhibit, “Lawyers Without Rights: Jewish Lawyers in Germany Under the Third Reich.” This powerful exhibit explores how the Third Reich used legislation, humiliation, and degradation to expel Jewish lawyers and jurists from the profession. The exhibit chronicles the lives of individual members of the Jewish legal community and will be on display at both the Main and North County branches in May.
Thursday, May 2nd, Lawyers Without Rights Reception: We are kicking off the “Lawyers Without Rights” Exhibit with an opening reception that is co-hosted by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL San Diego has been the leader in fighting anti-Semitism, and bigotry of all kinds, for over 40 years in San Diego and Imperial Counties, and we are proud to have them as a partner in this event. Our Special Guest speaker, Richard “Rick” Barton, will discuss the importance of the rule of law and an independent judiciary. Refreshments will be provided by Extraordinary Desserts. Tickets are going fast, so register today!
Saturday, May 4: SDLL is happy to be taking part in City Heights Law Day, a free event at the City Heights Weingart Library. There will be free legal consultations, legal information presentations, and an information fair.
Wednesday, May 6: On the topic of “free speech,” we are co-hosting an event with The Chula Vista Public Library at the Civic Center Branch entitled “Fake News. Shoddy News. Good News.” During this event, Executive Director and Editor of inewsource, Lorie Hearn, will discuss how to analyze and think critically about news sources in her 60 minute presentation.
Tuesday, May 7: We are partnering with the North County Bar Association and the Vista Branch of the San Diego County Library to offer a Free Legal Clinic from 11 am to 5 pm. This is a walk-in clinic and attendees will be seen on a first come, first served basis. Legal areas covered include bankruptcy, criminal, immigration, family law and more.
