Date: Tuesday, April 6, 2021
Time: 12:00 to 1:00 pm
Location: Online Webinar
About the Program:
According to the analysis done by the National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice, domestic violence incidents in the United States rose by 8.1% during the pandemic-related lockdowns. We hear the news report every day about victims of violence, harassment, stalking, and abuse.
However, when it happens to us, our family, or our friends, we are often unsure of how to keep ourselves safe. This presentation will describe the basic laws, forms, and procedures in San Diego County for requesting:
· Domestic Violence Restraining Orders,
· Civil Harassment Restraining Orders,
· Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Restraining Orders, and
· Other types of Protective Orders issued in CA.
About the Speaker:
Laura Handler has been working for San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program as a domestic violence legal advocate since 2006, providing services to thousands of survivors of domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, and other forms of harassment. She provides these services as the Senior Staff Attorney for San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s Vista Courthouse’s Restraining Order Clinic. Ms. Handler has also provided educational trainings throughout San Diego County at the San Diego YWCA, Child Welfare Services, Adult Protective Services, and at annual Continuing Education attorney trainings.
