We have partnered with the Oceanside Public Library and the Oceanside Cultural District for a special encore screening of the award-winning documentary “Tribal Justice” with special guest the Honorable Claudette White of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, who is featured in the film.
The documentary follows three individuals as their cases make their way through the tribal court systems. In Northern California, Abby Abinanti, Chief Justice of the Yurok Tribe, helps a man who is facing a third strike conviction and struggling with addiction. And at the Quechan Tribal Court near Yuma, Arizona, Judge White helps a mother struggling to be reunited with her nine year-old son, and Judge White’s own nephew, who faces felony charges.
This riveting documentary provides an unflinching look at reservation life and documents how tribal courts are utilizing restorative justice to heal rather than punish offenders. And, after the film screening, Judge White will discuss the tribal court system, the experience of taking part in the documentary, and give a follow up on her life and the lives of the subjects of the documentary.
A reception with light refreshments will begin at 6:00 pm, and the film will begin at 6:30 pm.
