This program will discuss the evolving field of dog law, including fundamentals, local laws, and ownership and custody disputes.

Not so long ago, our canine companions were considered mere property. But, their status is rising upward in a legal spectrum that favors best interests and sentience. Dog-lover lawyers have many opportunities for meaningful involvement in this evolving field. This session explores real-world options for law students, new attorneys, and experienced practitioners. It will discuss the types of matters best suited for self-represented litigants, and the important role of alternative dispute resolution.

Topics discussed will include:

  • Dog Law Fundamentals
  • Municipal Governance of Dogs and their Owners
  • Ownership and Custody Disputes
  • Professional Liability for Canine Businesses
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Nuts and Bolts for Handling Canine Disputes
