Craig DeWitt Higgs, Esq. is 2019 Witkin Honoree
Craig DeWitt Higgs, Esq., (Mar. 19, 1944 – Feb. 6, 2019) is the 2019 Witkin Award Honoree for Excellence in the Practice of Law. The Witkin Awards are presented annually to honor members of the San Diego legal community for civil leadership and excellence in the practice of law, adjudication of the law, public service, and as a community changemaker. Join us October 17th, from 5 pm to 8 pm to honor this years recipients.
Craig DeWitt Higgs was an accomplished litigator and mediator, as well as a pillar of the San Diego legal community. He began his career with the San Diego City Attorney’s Office before joining Higgs, Fletcher, & Mack, the firm co-founded by his father, DeWitt “Dutch” Higgs, a paragon in San Diego legal community in his own right. Higgs spent the rest of his career at the firm, first doing defense work before moving on to representing plaintiffs. He ultimately became a successful mediator, and was the firm’s longest serving partner.
Higgs accrued many accolades throughout his career. He was President of the San Diego County Bar Association, Chair of the California Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation, inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates, and selected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators. He was honored by Best Lawyers in America from 2008 to 2018, Super Lawyers from 2007 to 2018, named Legal Professional of the Year and Legend of the Bar by the San Diego County Bar Association, and recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University Of San Diego School Of Law.
Higgs was surrounded by friends and family when he passed away earlier this year. We are pleased to honor Craig Higgs posthumously with the 2019 Witkin Award for Excellence in the Practice of Law.
Join us for a wonderful evening at this year’s Witkin Awards. The awards will be presented at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, starting at 5:00 pm with cocktails. Dinner follows from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Witkin Award Ceremony is the primary fundraiser of the San Diego Law Library Foundation.
