About the Event
This program will provide a basic overview of California and Federal class action law. It will cover the elements necessary to qualify as a class action under California law and under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23. The program will also briefly touch on notice, dismissal, and settlement issues unique to class actions in both State and Federal court. The program will conclude with a brief discussion of the key differences between California and Federal class actions.
About the Speaker
Meghan Ashley Wharton is a Senior Deputy City Attorney for the City of San Diego practicing in the Civil Litigation Division, Ms. Wharton’s practice focuses on public law disputes including municipal finance issues and election law. Her practice includes litigating complex cases in a broad range of areas, including writ proceedings, validation actions, and class actions. Ms. Wharton is currently defending the City in three class action cases involving Proposition 218 challenges to City actions. Prior to joining the City, Ms. Wharton practiced at law firms in San Diego, Silicon Valley, and Phoenix, Arizona where she specialized in commercial and intellectual property litigation. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2001 and a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin.
