About the Event
Presenters will focus on non-filer taxpayers with little or no income who do not receive Social Security, SSI, Railroad Retirement, or VA benefits and did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019. The deadline for registering for a stimulus check is November 21, 2020. Currently, once the federal guideline with the IRS passes, non-filers will have the claim their Economic Impact Payment as a credit on 2020 income tax return.

About the Program
Migration at the Southwest border has been a controversial topic in recent years. ACLU attorney Bardis Vakili will present data to provide a better understanding of the situation at the border, as well as a description of current policies being applied at the border, how those policies have shifted in recent years, and his office’s litigation efforts to protect due process and fairness in the immigration system. As an attorney in the ACLU’s San Diego & Imperial County affiliate, this presentation will focus on the perspective from California and the California-Mexico border community.

About the Program
This training is geared toward attorneys and other legal professionals with little or no education law experience who are interested in learning more about special education issues such as eligibility for IEPs (Individualized Educational Programs) and 504 Plans, the assessment process, and suspensions/expulsions. Attorneys will learn the legal basics and how to advocate for education services for children, including suggestions for advocacy during remote learning due to COVID-19. The training will include an overview of San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s Education Law Project and will explain how attorneys can volunteer to assist a foster child with education issues.
