This “Ask a Law Librarian” service lets you chat live with a California Law Librarian to ask questions and get legal information. Law Librarians are usually available to chat Monday-Thursday 8-5 and Friday 8-4, except holidays. If a Law Librarian is not available, we recommend that you call or visit your local public law library.
The Law Librarian who answers your question may or may not be a librarian at your local law library. When the Law Librarian cannot answer your question by referring to free Internet resources, you may be referred to your local public law library.

It is unlawful for Law Librarians to interpret legal information, or to advise you how the law might apply to your situation. This kind of service would constitute the unauthorized practice of law. If you need further help to solve your legal problem, we recommend that you consult an attorney.

Please use Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome or Safari, and “session cookies” enabled in your browser. Opera and AOL’s browser are not supported.
Once you are connected, please do not use your “forward” or “refresh/reload” buttons on your browser, or you will be disconnected! There are forward, back and refresh buttons within the software’s shared webpage frame that you can use.

Do not try to bookmark or print anything during the session, or you may be disconnected! If you provide an email address, a complete transcript, including all chat and links to Web sites visited will be emailed to you. If you do not have an email address, or do not wish to have a transcript sent to you, you may leave that field blank.
If you must open a second browser for any reason while connected, please use the “start” menu or taskbar shortcut, not control “n” or File “new”. If you do so, you will crash.
