Law Day is celebrated every May 1st. It is a day set aside to understand and celebrate the law and how the law and legal process protect the freedoms we all share. This year’s Law Day theme is “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.” These three rights guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution are the cornerstones of our government. Law Day is an opportunity for us to understand and advocate for these rights.
After an opening reception at 9:30 am, there will be presentations examining each of these three fundamental rights with speakers from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, KPBS San Diego, the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists, and local City Heights religious leaders. There will also be a seminar discussing estate and end of life planning, and activities for children. Volunteer lawyers will be providing free 30-minutes legal consultations for attendees from 10:00 am and 2:30 pm, and vendors, including SDLL, will be there to discuss their services.
