The Lawyers Club’s Human Trafficking Collaborative has been selected to receive the prestigious Witkin Award as a Changemaker Advancing Access to Justice. The Witkin Awards are presented annually to honor members of the San Diego legal community for civic leadership and excellence in the practice of the law, adjudication of the law, legal education, and the advancement of access to justice. Join us Thursday, October 4, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm to honor this year’s recipients.
In 2014, The Lawyers Club of San Diego founded The Lawyers Club of San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force. It evolved into The Human Trafficking Collaborative or “HTC.” The overarching goal of HTC activities is to engage Lawyers Club’s members and provide them with the skills and tools necessary to join the fight against human trafficking in San Diego.
The HTC has four primary focus areas:
- education such that the public obtains a complete and accurate understanding of the human trafficking problem in San Diego and its impact on the community;
- survivor services, including training seminars on pro bono legal representation;
- educational advocacy aimed at educating Lawyers Club members about pending human trafficking legislation and educating government officials on the impact of this issue on the San Diego community; and
- providing support for local organizations engaged in the fight against human trafficking and support for survivors.
The 2018 Witkin Award Honoring a Community Changemaker will be accepted on behalf of the HTC by its two co-chairs: Danica Taylor, a Deputy District Attorney in the Human Trafficking and Internet Crimes Against Children Unit of the Juvenile Division; and Megan Walker, an employment attorney with the national labor and employment law firm, Fisher Phillips.
Join us for a wonderful evening at this year’s Witkin Awards. The awards will be presented at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, starting at 5:00 pm with cocktails. Dinner and comedian Mark Christopher Lawrence follow from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Witkin Award Ceremony is the primary fundraiser of the San Diego Law Library Foundation.
