Resources for 2018 Tax Season

By Kelly on February 15, 2018//Leave a comment

The 2018 tax season is starting. There are many resources available to answer your questions as you prepare your tax returns.

First, the Law Library has a tax law research guide. It includes links to many IRS and California Franchise Tax Board resources, as well as descriptions of helpful databases and books in the library.

Second, you can find state and federal tax forms in a variety of ways. The IRS and Franchise Tax Board make it easy to download tax forms from this year or previous ones. You can enter your zip code here to find locations near you that will have state tax forms.

This year, tax forms are delayed due to the very recent changes in the federal tax code. In fact, many California tax forms will not even be available until late February.

Third, you can receive help preparing your taxes through two programs. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance can help if you meet one of several qualifications. Additionally, if you are over 60 years old, then you can take advantage of the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program.

Lastly, the Law Library’s Downtown location hosts a monthly tax clinic with the Legal Aid Society of San Diego. These clinics are for low-income people who have current federal tax problems and not for tax preparation. The clinic can help you if you are being audited, going to tax court, have failed to pay taxes for years, or even if the IRS owes you money and they haven’t sent it to you. The tax clinic is on the last Wednesday of the month, from 2 pm to 4 pm.
