10th Anniversary of Lindley Law and Comics is TODAY!
Join us today, July 16, at 4:00 pm at the San Diego Central Library for our 10th annual Lindley Lecture on Law & Comics. USD School of Law Professor Lisa Ramsey will lead the lively discussion with our Special Guest Speakers: Jonathan Maberry, Rob Salkowitz, and Stu Rees.
They will discuss the rights of creators and the legal protections available. Then, the panel will focus on fan created content and cosplay and the balance of intellectual property protections and a creator’s need to market their creation. The panelists will answer questions from the audience, and we will finish off with a drawing for a wonderful prize pack reflecting the ten year history of Law & Comics.

Special Guest Speakers
Jonathan Maberry is a New York Times bestselling author, 5-time Bram Stoker Award winner, and comic book writer. He writes in multiple genres including suspense, thriller, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and action; and he writes for adults, teens and middle grade. He is a board member of the Horror Writers Association and the president of the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers.
His works include the Joe Ledger thrillers, Glimpse, the Rot & Ruin series, the Dead of Night series, The Wolfman, X-Files Origins: Devil’s Advocate, Mars One, and many others. His comics include Road of the Dead: Highway to Hell and Black Panther: DoomWar. His vampire apocalypse book series, V-WARS, is in production as a Netflix original series, starring Ian Somerhalder, and will debut in 2019.He runs a monthly writers coffeehouse as well. Rob Salkowitz is a writer, educator, and consultant focused on the business of popular culture. He writes about comics, media, and entertainment for Forbes, ICv2, Publishers Weekly, Full Bleed, and other publications, and teaches marketing and communication in the Communication Leadership graduate program at the University of Washington.
Rob is author, editor or contributor to nearly a dozen books, including Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture, Marvel: Universe of Super-Heroes, and Comics and Economics: The Shadowy World of Capes, Masks and Invisible Hands. Stu Rees is a local entertainment lawyer who represents mostly visual arts creators. Notably, Stu represents more than 100 cartoonists in their negotiations with the major newspaper comic strip syndicates, and more than 400 cartoonists and writers in a mix of online, greeting card, book licensing, and smaller syndication deals. He is the only lawyer specializing in syndication contracts.
Stu and his attorney wife, Maddy Dodson, draw and write their own law cartoons, Stu’s Views, www.stus.com. They have been published in several hundred print and electronic forums throughout the world.
Lisa Ramsey is a Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law, where she is a founding member of the Center for Intellectual Property Law and Markets. She teaches trademark law, intellectual property, and international intellectual property classes and her recent scholarship focuses on the potential conflict between trademark laws and free speech rights.
Lisa recently participated on a panel at the International Trademark Association annual meeting that discussed consumer and brand owner reactions to fan works.
