How do I use Chat Reference?

Type your question into the smaller white box with the text “Type here to chat.Press ENTER to send.” Once you’ve hit Enter, we will respond as soon as possible (not necessarily immediately) during chat reference hours.


When can I send you a message?

Chat Reference is available M-F 8 am – 5 pm and Saturday 9 am – 1 pm. Even during these times, Chat Reference may be unavailable due to various circumstances. If you want to leave a question for us when we’re offline, please provide us with a way to contact you later with an answer. Also,you can email us or give us a call at (619) 531-3900.


Is there anything I can’t ask?

We will help with your legal research needs, but we do not provide legal advice. We reserve the right to refuse service if user is inappropriate.

Reference questions are answered by librarians from California’s County Public Law Libraries, and librarians from the San Diego Law Library provide hours of coverage per week in answering law questions. This is a cooperative service of nationwide librarians, so your question will not necessarily be answered by a librarian from the San Diego Law Library.
